Checked baggage prices vary by route. Prices are cheapest when you purchase a checked baggage allowance online, and most expensive at the airport. We recommend you add checked baggage to your booking before arriving at the airport. Add checked baggage to an existing booking.

Limits: How much? How heavy? How big?

Each passenger can purchase up to 40kg of checked baggage. No individual item can weigh more than 32kg. 2.  BAGGAGE
  3.  OVERSIZED BAGGAGE

Maximum weight

No single bag or item can weigh more than 32kg. If you have a checked-baggage allowance of 35kg or 40kg your baggage must be split over at least two bags, with no bag weighing more than 32kg.

If any single bag or item weighs more than 32kg it must be carried as freight. See Qantas freight

Oversized Items

Any bag or item with a single side longer than one metre (1000mm, 39in), including wheels, handles and packaging is oversized. Oversized item handling fees may apply.

The oversized item fee does not apply to oversized assistive devices, mobility aids, medical equipment and infant items.

Baggage charges at the airport

If you haven't added baggage and you arrive at the airport with checked baggage, charges will apply.

You'll be charged a fee for up to 15kg of baggage per passenger, and after that for every additional kilo at the per kilo rate. If you have added checked baggage to your booking but arrive with more than your allowance you’ll be charged for excess baggage. Excess baggage is charged per kilo. We can’t guarantee that we’ll be able to add excess baggage to your flight.

Make sure you check our policy for baggage transfers if you have flight connections on your itinerary.

See more information about checked baggage

Oversized baggage

We understand that not everyone’s things fit neatly into a suitcase, however, if you’re bringing large checked baggage items, an oversized item handling fee may apply.

Oversized items will count towards your total checked baggage weight, so make sure you purchase enough checked baggage.

If your oversized item is required for mobility or medical reasons, or you’re bringing a pram or other items for your infant or child, it won’t count as part of your checked baggage weight and you won’t be charged the oversize item fee. See below for details.

Oversized items

Any bag or item with a single side longer than one metre (1000mm, 39in), including wheels, handles and packaging is an oversized item.

You will need to pay the oversized item handling fee for sporting equipment, such as surfboards, skis, fishing rods and golf bags, bikes, large musical instruments and other large items like paintings, statues, televisions, and furniture if they have any side longer than one metre. Any oversized assistive devices, mobility aids, medical equipment and infant items can be checked in for free.

Oversized item fee

The oversized item fee is a separate handling fee that applies to any item with a single side longer than one metre (1000mm, 39 inches). The oversized item fee does not apply to oversized assistive devices, mobility aids, medical equipment and infant items.

If you choose to bring any oversized items, you pay the fee per item, per flight. Each passenger can bring up to two oversized items.

Remember, the oversized item fee is paid in addition to any checked baggage allowance, it does not increase your baggage allowance.

Paying the oversized item fee

The easiest way to pay the oversized item fee is to add it to your fare when you purchase checked baggage as part of your booking.

You can also pay the oversized item fee after you book, at Manage booking or through the Call Centre.

It will save you time at the airport if you pay the fee before you arrive.

At the airport you’ll need to pay the fee before you take your items to the oversized baggage counter.

Please note: the oversized item fee is non-refundable.

Make sure you have purchased enough checked baggage allowance to cover both your standard baggage and oversized items. The fee does not apply to mobility and assistive devices, medical equipment and infant items. When traveling on multiple Jetstar carriers, the highest fee will apply.

Oversized items and checked baggage weight

The weight of your oversized items counts towards your total checked baggage weight. Make sure you purchase enough checked baggage to cover your standard baggage and any oversized items.

Space on board is limited, so checking-in your stroller is strongly encouraged. Strollers, as checked baggage, will be returned as quickly as possible upon arrival.

INFANTS & CHILDREN

What do I need to know about travelling with my infant?

  1. FAMILY TRAVEL

Infant booking update:

For online bookings, 1 infant can be included for each adult.

If you’re travelling with more than one infant, or if you’d like to book a seat for your infant, you will need to get our help to make your booking. Please contact us.

At Jetstar we refer to children under 2 years old as infants.

  • Your infant can sit on your lap for the entire flight. You’ll be provided with a special seat belt for your infant that connects to your seatbelt. If you’re nursing an infant, or if you're travelling with a child, you won’t be able to travel in an exit row seat (this includes extra legroom seats). An infant fee applies, see below.
  • If your infant is less than 2 years old on your outbound flight, they won’t need an allocated seat on the return flight, even if they turn 2 during your trip. This won’t apply if your infant was booked on separate bookings for the outbound and return flight.
  • You can purchase a separate seat for your infant, but they must be able to sit up unaided. If your infant can’t sit up in an aircraft seat without help, then you must bring an approved car seat for them to sit in. You can bring an approved car seat on to all Jetstar aircraft and all Jetstar Japan (GK) flights. See: What do I need to know about bringing a car seat on board? A limited number of car seats can be fitted on each flight and car seats must be fitted onto a window seat. If you would like to book a seat for your infant, with or without a car seat, please contact us to make your booking.
  • Children aged 2 years or older must travel in an allocated seat for safety reasons, so you’ll need to purchase a fare for them.
  • Passengers must be at least 15 years old to sit in exit rows. This includes all extra legroom seats.

Infant fee

When travelling with an infant or small child, you can bring any combination or all of the following items as checked baggage for free: a pram, a stroller, a portable cot and/or a highchair. You won’t have to pay the oversized item fee for any of these items.

  • The infant fee applies per infant, per flight. This includes direct flights and bookings with a connecting flight.
  • If your booking includes both domestic and international flights, you’ll pay the higher fee. See the table below for details.

Travelling with more than one infant

A single passenger may accompany two infants. One infant can be nursed on the passenger's lap, but the second infant must have an allocated seat and be sitting up unaided or in an approved car seat. If you’re travelling with more than one infant, please contact us to make your booking.

Infants less than 7 days old

Infants less than 48 hours old are not permitted to travel on Jetstar flights.

A Jetstar medical clearance form must be completed for infants aged between 3 and 7 days old for them to travel on Jetstar (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K) and Jetstar Japan (GK) flights. No infant less than 7 days old may travel with Jetstar Pacific (BL).

For more detailed information see: Pregnancy and air travel

Bassinets

Bassinets can be requested on some international flights. See: Can I request a bassinet for my infant?

Checking in

If you’re travelling with an infant on your lap on a Jetstar Airways (JQ) domestic flight within Australia or New Zealand, or a Jetstar Japan (GK) domestic flight within Japan, you can check in online. To check in with your infant, go to Online check-in.

For now, on all other Jetstar flights, if you're travelling with an infant you can't check in online, you must check in at the airport.

Identification

Proof of age, such as a birth certificate or passport, may be required for infants under 2 years. If you don’t provide an acceptable form of identification for the infant upon request at check-in, your infant may not be allowed to travel.

If you’re travelling on an international flight, your infant or child always requires a passport.

Infant food and drink

We don’t carry infant food or drinks on board, so be sure to bring enough for your journey. It will count towards your carry-on baggage allowance. See: Do I need to bring food and drinks for my infant?

Infants and carry-on baggage

Infants not occupying a seat don’t have a carry-on baggage allowance.

You’ll have to carry any baby items such as food, drink, nappies and clothing needed during your flight as part of your own carry-on baggage allowance.

If your infant has an allocated seat, and is either sitting up unaided or in an approved car seat, their fare includes the standard carry-on baggage allowance.

Infants and checked baggage

We know that travelling with infants and small children requires a lot of gear, so we let you carry the following items as checked baggage for free, regardless of fare and in addition to any checked-baggage allowance: a pram or stroller; a portable cot; a highchair; a car seat, baby capsule or booster seat.

See: Can I bring a pram, stroller, portable cot or highchair as checked baggage?

Infants not occupying a seat are not entitled to a checked baggage allowance.

Infant harnesses and slings

Harnesses and slings are handy at the airport, but their use is restricted on board. See: Can my infant travel in a baby carrier or harness?

For more information see the family travel page

Flying on Jetstar with kids under two

If you’re flying with a child under two, you might have a few questions. Do they need a passport? Do they need their own seat? Do I have to bring baby food? Well, we’re glad you asked!

  • Jetstar
  • November 2018

We hear you – travelling with infants can be a challenge, even for seasoned travellers. It’s hard to talk them out of a tantrum if they don’t know how to talk yet! But if you get prepared and arm yourself with the right information (and a few distraction techniques), the journey can be a whole lot smoother for you and your tiny travellers.

What do I need to know before we go?

To check in like a pro, make sure you’ve got all the information you need about flying on Jetstar with children.

At Jetstar, children under 2 are considered ‘infants’. Infants less than 48 hours old are not able to travel on Jetstar flights, and a Jetstar medical clearance form must be completed for infants aged between 3 and 7 days old. No infant less than 7 days old may travel with Jetstar Pacific (BL).

If you're travelling with an infant on a domestic flight in Australia, New Zealand or Japan you can check in online, on all other Jetstar flights you need to check in at the airport, so allow yourself plenty of time. At the airport, you will need to provide some documentation. This means a birth certificate for domestic flights. For international flights, they’ll need a passport - just like everyone else.

Does my infant need their own seat?

If your infant can sit up on their own, you can buy them their own seat. If they’re too small to sit up, just bring a car seat to fix into their seat. Just let us know that you need to add a car seat to your booking as there are certain requirements around them and we can only allow so many on board.

What can I bring on board?

Baby food and drinks! Our menu doesn’t include baby food, so BYO your little one’s favourite snacks to keep them satisfied. Remember that any food, drink, nappies and clothing you bring on board will count as part of your own carry-on baggage allowance. If your infant has their own seat, they have their own carry-on baggage allowance.

As long as your collapsible pram fits within your allowance and our size and weight rules, you can use it right up to the gate. Just pop it in a protective cover and bring it on board.

What can’t I bring on board?

Kids may be small, but boy, do they need some equipment! Strollers, cots, highchairs… that’s why Jetstar lets you check in an extra four items – including a pram or stroller, a portable cot, a highchair, a car seat, baby capsule or booster seat - at no cost, in addition to your checked baggage allowance.

Baby carriers are handy at the airport, but you have to take them off to get through airport security. Once on board, bub will need to be in your lap with their seatbelt fastened when the seatbelt sign is on. If you’re ever unsure of what to bring on board, or how much, just have a look at our handy page on carry-on baggage.

How can I keep them happy?!

If you take a relaxed approach to checking in and passing through security, your kids will too. And don’t forget, Jetstar staff love to see kids travelling and they’ll make sure your children enjoy the whole journey.

UNACCOMPANIED MINORS

For full details of the process and all requirements, see Young passengers on Jetstar Asia (3K) flights.

The requirements for accompanying passengers for children have also changed for all Jetstar Asia (3K) flights, see Independent travellers and accompanying passengers.

Young passengers travelling alone on flights connecting to Jetstar Asia (3K)

Any young passengers aged 12 and over, but younger than 18, travelling on a Jetstar Airways (JQ), Jetstar Japan (GK) or Jetstar Pacific (BL) flight that connects to a Jetstar Asia (3K) flight must also follow this process from their departure airport.

If two or more passengers, aged 12 and over but younger than 18, are travelling together on a 3K flight, then each passenger will need to complete the process outlined above.

Young passengers travelling alone on Jetstar Airways (JQ) flights

A young passenger is regarded as being able to travel independently if they are currently attending or enrolled in secondary school and:

  • can show proof at check-in that they are currently attending or enrolled in secondary school; and
  • can meet our Independent Traveller Requirements.

For a young passenger aged 12 years or over, proof of age can be acceptable as proof of secondary school enrolment, because in Australia and New Zealand, anyone 12 years and over is generally required to be enrolled in secondary school.

So, any of the following forms of identification can be used to verify secondary school attendance or enrolment and must be presented by a young passenger at check-in:

  • Passport or birth certificate, (proof of age for passengers who are 12 years and over);
  • School ID card from a secondary school (can be from a previous year and may be expired); or
  • Letter from the secondary school on school letterhead stating the year and confirming current attendance or enrolment in current secondary school (including enrolment in secondary school for the coming year after graduation from primary school).

Children who are not yet enrolled in or attending secondary school will be regarded as unable to travel independently and must be accompanied by an appropriate accompanying passenger.

Even if a young passenger meets all the above requirements, a parent or guardian should still assess if the young passenger is independent enough to travel alone on a Jetstar flight, before a booking is made. Jetstar is not able to provide supervision or assistance, because we don't have the systems, staff or facilities to do so. So, if a parent or guardian feels their child needs supervision, they should not book them to travel alone and instead should book them to travel with an accompanying passenger.

See Independent travellers and accompanying passengers for further details.

Checking in on Jetstar Airways (JQ) international flights

A young passenger travelling alone on a JQ international flight should meet all the above requirements, always have a valid passport and have a parent or guardian present at all times with them during their check-in.

If no parent or guardian is present at check-in and our staff have reason to believe the young passenger may not have permission from a parent or guardian to travel alone, the young passenger may be refused check-in until permission to travel alone can be confirmed.

Young passengers travelling alone on Jetstar Pacific (BL) flights

For any domestic or international flights operated by Jetstar Pacific (BL), passengers below the age of 12 will not be eligible to travel unless they are accompanied by an appropriate accompanying passenger.

Passengers aged 12 and above may travel alone (subject to meeting our Independent Traveller Requirements). The parents or guardians of a passenger between the ages of 12 and 14 years must complete and sign a declaration at check-in before a passenger between these ages can travel unaccompanied.

Young passengers travelling alone on Jetstar Japan (GK) flights

For any domestic Japan flights operated by Jetstar Japan (GK) passengers who are 2-11 years of age will not be eligible to travel unless they are accompanied by an appropriate accompanying passenger aged 12 years or older. Infants (under 2 years) must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, or an accompanying passenger who is at least 15 years old.

Passengers aged 12 years or above may travel alone (subject to meeting our Independent Traveller Requirements).

For any international flights operated by Jetstar Japan (GK) passengers below the age of 12 will not be eligible to travel unless they are accompanied by an appropriate accompanying passenger who is 15 years or older. Passengers aged 12 and above may travel alone (subject to meeting our Independent Traveller Requirements).

See Independent travellers and accompanying passengers for further details.

Accepted Proof of Age Identification

Acceptable forms of identification to verify a young passenger’s age are:

  • Passport; OR
  • Birth certificate.

All passengers are responsible for ensuring they have the correct travel documentation required to enter the country they are travelling to.

PREGNANT PASSENGERS

Pregnancy and air travel

  1. PREGNANCY
  2.  IN-FLIGHT HEALTH
  3.  FAMILY TRAVEL

If you’re pregnant it's important to check a few key things before you book a flight.

  • Always talk to your doctor before making a booking to see if it’s safe for you to travel
  • When you enter the third trimester of your pregnancy (28 weeks or more) you need to carry a letter or certificate from your medical professional stating it is safe for you to fly (see below)
  • If you’re having complications with your pregnancy, or expecting more than one child, you’ll need to get medical clearance before you fly
  • We can’t guarantee that travelling while pregnant for you at any time will be safe for you and your baby

Can I fly with Jetstar if I’m pregnant?

There are a few additional things to consider if you’re pregnant and would like to fly with us.

To be safe, the best thing to do is get advice from your own doctor or midwife; they’ll know whether it’s a good idea for you to travel, especially during the later stages of pregnancy.

Whether you’ll be able to fly is also determined by the duration of the flight, what stage of pregnancy you’re in, if you’re expecting one child or more, and/or if you have any pregnancy complications.

Permitted travel

Flights of less than 4 hours

  • Single pregnancy – up to the end of the 40th week
  • Multiple pregnancy – up to the end of the 36th week

Flights of 4 or more hours:

  • Single pregnancy –up to the end of the 36th week
  • Multiple pregnancy – up to the end of the 32nd week

When you're in the third trimester of your pregnancy (28 weeks or more), remember you must bring specific documentation (see below) from your doctor before you’ll be allowed to fly.

When you reach the third trimester of your pregnancy you aren’t allowed to sit in an exit row seat on board any Jetstar aircraft. This is a safety measure to protect you and your baby, as you might be at risk if you need to operate the heavy exit door during an emergency.

Don’t forget: when you’re travelling internationally some countries limit the entry of non-national pregnant passengers. You must check with the relevant embassy or consulate before you travel, to see if these limitations will apply to you.

Note for Jetstar Pacific (BL), Jetstar Asia (3K) and Jetstar Japan (GK) International passengers

  • When your pregnancy has reached 28 weeks or more it’s mandatory to carry a certificate or letter from a registered doctor or midwife, dated no more than 10 days prior to travel.
  • If you’re travelling on Jetstar Pacific (BL) you won’t be able to travel if you’re more than 36 weeks pregnant.
  • If you’re travelling on Jetstar Asia (3K) and Jetstar Pacific (BL) you won’t be able to sit in an exit row if you are in any stage of pregnancy.

If I’m pregnant do I need bring medical documentation with me when I travel?

If you’re having an uncomplicated pregnancy and are travelling within your first 28 weeks, you don’t need to bring any pregnancy-related medical documentation.

When your pregnancy has reached 28 weeks or more you will need to carry a certificate or letter from a registered doctor or registered midwife, dated no more than 10 days prior to travel. This document should confirm:

  • the approximate due date
  • whether it’s a single or multiple pregnancy
  • that your pregnancy is complication-free

Carry this document with you at the airport and in your carry-on baggage, as it needs to be available on request.

Please note: when travelling on Japan domestic flights operated by Jetstar Japan (GK), if you're more than 35 weeks pregnant you will need to meet the above requirements for travel.

What if I have complications with my pregnancy?

You’ll need to get a medical clearance if your pregnancy is not routine or has complications. You can find the medical clearance forms here

Carry this document with you at the airport and in your carry-on baggage, as it must be available on request.

How soon after giving birth is it OK for me to travel?

You’ll need to get medical clearance if you’re travelling up to 7 days after giving birth.

Your baby must be at least 48 hours old before they can travel on Jetstar (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K) and Jetstar Japan (GK) flights. They will need medical clearance to travel between 3 and 7 days after birth.

No infant younger than 7 days old may travel with Jetstar Pacific (BL).

Wheelchairs, mobility aids and reduced mobility

  1. SPECIFIC ASSISTANCE

Making a booking and planning your journey

We’re here to help make your journey a smooth one. Let us know if you require specific assistance with using a wheelchair, boarding the aircraft or getting to your seat.

Whether you've booked through jetstar.com, our contact centre, or a travel agent, you will need to let us know the type of assistance you require and if you’ll be bringing any mobility aids.

Requesting your level of wheelchair assistance

Please let us know which level of assistance you require. We will apply the relevant IATA code – WCHR, WCHS or WCHC – to your booking so that throughout your journey our team members know the level of wheelchair assistance you require.

All levels of wheelchair assistance include assistance from the aircraft to the baggage claim area at your destination. Of course, you are welcome to make your own way throughout the airport too.

Please note that there can be some delays in providing wheelchair assistance, particularly during busy periods, so please factor this into your travel arrangements.

If you haven’t requested specific assistance prior to travel, we might not be able to provide assistance on the day due to operational constraints and limitations.

Letting us know about your wheelchair or mobility aid

Please contact us to let us know:

  • if your wheelchair or mobility aid is manual or battery-powered
  • the weight of your wheelchair or mobility aid
  • if your battery-powered wheelchair or mobility aid has a dry or wet cell or lithium ion battery

If your wheelchair or mobility aid weighs more than 32kg and is unable to stand in the upright position and operate in free wheel mode, we will not be able to carry it.

Jetstar Asia flights - Customers who are not checking in a wheelchair but require the use of a wheelchair at the airport for Jetstar Asia (3K) flights will need to pay a wheelchair service and hire fee.

Travelling with an Accompanying Passenger

Let us know if you’re travelling with an Accompanying Passenger before you fly so we can seat you together.

Checking in your wheelchair

We take all reasonable care with mobility aids, but please note that our liability is limited for any damage caused during transit. You’ll need to make sure you have appropriate insurance to cover your mobility aid. For more information, please check our conditions of carriage.

If your mobility aid requires re-assembly, you or an Accompanying Passenger need to be able to do this as our staff will not be able to assist. You should consider removing and securing any customisations to your wheelchair to reduce the risk of damage to them.

Seating

We will do our best to assign a seat towards the front of the cabin for customers who request specific assistance.

Customers requiring wheelchair assistance will not be able to sit in emergency exit seating due to aviation safety requirements.

If you need to have your leg extended during the flight, you won’t be able to sit in an extra leg room/exit row seat so you may need to purchase extra seats. Please contact us for assistance.

Find out more about the limits on assistance and mobility aids.

At the departure airport

If you request assistance from us in advance, we can assist you from the airport check-in counter to the departure gate.

If you have not requested assistance in advance, you may not be able to travel as planned due to operational constraints and limits which may apply to the number of customers we can provide wheelchair assistance to on each flight.

We will provide a slide board and our staff will assist with transfers between wheelchairs and into your aircraft seat. We do not use an eagle lift, hoists or manual lifting for customer transfers. If you need or prefer that level of assistance, you may need to travel with an Accompanying Passenger to assist you, or you may need to travel with another airline. Find out more about slide board transfers.

During busy periods, we ask for your patience and there may be delays before assistance can be provided.

Blind or vision impaired

In-flight health

  1. IN-FLIGHT HEALTH
  2.  PREGNANCY
  3.  SPECIFIC ASSISTANCE

If you are worried about whether you’re well enough you to fly, please see your doctor before you make a booking.

Please let us know if you have an illness or condition that could make it unsafe for you or other passengers if you travel.

If we’re not confident that you’re well enough to fly we may refuse to let you board the aircraft.

Please make sure you pack any medication you think you might need during your flight, both prescription and non-prescription.

Some illnesses or conditions may prevent you flying unless you provide a medical clearance. Know all about our medical clearance guidelines and forms.

If you’re pregnant we have specific guidelines and requirements. See our pregnancy page for more details.

I have an illness or medical condition. Do I need a medical clearance form before I can fly?

Most medical conditions shouldn’t stop you from flying, but for certain conditions you’ll need to get medical clearance before your booking can be confirmed.

Please read the medical clearance guidelines to see if your illness or condition is likely to stop you travelling or if we’ll need you to get clearance before we let you fly.

The guidelines are attached to the medical clearance forms.

Where can I find Jetstar’s medical clearance forms?

Please note: Passengers who require medical clearance won’t be allowed to travel on Jetstar Pacific (BL) flights.

I’m an acute allergy sufferer. Will my flight be allergy-free?

Unfortunately we can’t promise an allergy-free environment on board our aircraft.

In particular, we’re unable to guarantee a peanut-free flight, as it’s impossible for us to prevent other passengers from bringing peanuts or peanut snacks onto the aircraft.

Our cabin crew aren’t trained to administer adrenalin or any other medication.

Please pack any medical supplies you’ll need for your journey in your carry-on baggage.

If I have a contagious disease will I be allowed to fly?

No, not until there’s no longer a risk to other passengers.

What do I need to know about deep vein thrombosis (DVT)?

Some studies have found that lack of movement over time could contribute to blood clots forming in the legs (DVT - Deep Vein Thrombosis). If you feel you could be at risk from DVT or other health problems, see your doctor before you travel.

I need to use specific medication or hypodermic needles while on board the aircraft. What should I do?

If you’re carrying hypodermic needles you’ll need to declare them at the airport security screening point and, where possible, produce documentation or identification to confirm your medical condition.

Medication should be clearly marked with a professionally printed identification label, a manufacturer’s name or a pharmaceutical label.

Please pack any medical supplies you’ll need for your journey in your carry-on baggage. See: Travelling with medication

ravelling with assistive devices

  1. SPECIFIC ASSISTANCE

An assistive device is any piece of equipment that assists a passenger with a disability in caring for themselves, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing or carrying out any other daily activity.

Common assistive devices include walking canes or frames, crutches, rollators, breathing support machines (such as a CPAP or BiPAP), medical devices (such as respirators and ventilators), hoists, shower chairs, commodes (toilet chairs), inflatable pressure cushions, and medications.

Only certain assistive devices can be carried in the aircraft cabin – such as walking canes and crutches.

Some assistive devices cannot be carried in the aircraft cabin at all – this includes wheelchairs, non-collapsible walking frames/rollators and hiking sticks and poles.

These items will need to be checked in. If you use a hiking stick or pole as an assistive device, you will need to travel with an additional or alternative assistive device that can be carried in the aircraft cabin, such as a walking cane.

You can also find out more about travelling with travel oxygen.
